Salivary Crystallization

When a woman is in her fertile phase, her estrogen levels rise, causing her saliva to dry into beautiful frost-like crystals, often compared to ferns. They begin as small crystals when the woman first enters her fertile phase and become more concentrated on the slide right up to the time of ovulation when the slide is completely covered by crystals. This crystallization also correlates with the woman's fertile quality cervical mucous / fluid, which is necessary for conception to occur. If the woman conceives, her saliva will remain crystallized for two to twelve weeks. If she does not conceive, her saliva samples will return to a non-fertile state, and appear as they did before her fertile phase, within days of ovulation until she becomes fertile again the next cycle.

Fertility awareness offers women many benefits and can be relevant throughout their lives. A woman can use this awareness to better understand the changes that occur in her body during adolescence and later to aid her in spacing her children. Fertility awareness can allow a woman to identify changes in her cycles that could signal a health concern that might otherwise not have been noticed. Noting her ovulation cycles can help a woman to determine if she is peri-menopausal.
